Relying on AI for interior design: a potential creative trap.
There is no argument that using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for interior design is growing in popularity. It is a “quick and easy” generator of pictures and imagery that can produce glossy, editorial-like images with enhanced lighting features. The programs use art, furniture, and fixtures of a specific chosen style based on prompts provided by the user. With the ever-growing use of AI across all areas, it doesn’t surprise me when some clients present me with AI-generated images of their spaces before our creative process has even started. Sometimes the generated image can help the client articulate a stylistic direction, but at other times, heavy reliance on it for inspiration can have them unintentionally distancing themselves from their own authentic design story.
The question has been posed to me before; “will AI replace Interior Designers?” I feel that designers who do not embrace a fundamentally artistic process, and heavily rely on AI themselves, are most at risk for “obsolescence.” From my perspective, AI is a tool, but it does not replace the true creative. I am not necessarily “anti-AI” in interior design. What I am is a creative-at-heart who believes in and lives by the artistic process that unfolds when humans, not AI, create. I embrace the romance that is at the core of bringing clients’ memories and their human experience together with specific pieces of art and furniture.
The creative process has meaning and is essential to telling an authentic story. A story that develops naturally over time is something that can’t be achieved with AI alone.
When you choose to work with Kate Kelly Interiors, I get to know and understand you as a person. I can then present materials and finishes to you and study how you react to each one of them. I observe and note what excites and invokes a feeling in you, because it invokes a feeling in me. From our shared experience, we move together through a design process that seeks and values your input. Upon the project’s completion, you are then rewarded with a sense of meaningful emotional connection to the room that we created together.
At Kate Kelly Interiors, we keep the artistry, creativity, and most importantly, the uniquely human experience in interior design.
Best,
Kate
