Designing for Historic Homes: Preserving Original Character
For anyone who has been in Southeastern, PA long enough, I can almost guarantee that you’ve come across or interacted with some piece of historic charm that is prevalent throughout the landscape.
When your neighborhood is within driving distance to the birthplace of the United States of America, the very place that the Declaration of Independence was signed, it is no surprise that the area's historic homes are filled with character and craftsmanship from a time since passed. The unique and special qualities of area homes carried on in construction through the 1800’s “Gilded Age”, into the 1900’s, and then through the modern, architecturally significant properties designed in the mid to late 20th century.
Having lived in Southeastern, PA my whole life, I have always had a strong connection to the ideals of preservation, conservation, and the delicate handling of the features of our past. When designing around these features, it requires the utmost care and deliberate attention in order to honor our collective story.
Not every home is a “tear down,” and not every original feature of an old home should be destined for a “gut job.”
Balancing a client’s specific needs while honoring original character can be challenging, but it is not impossible. Where necessary, a range of specialists in their fields can be brought together to collaborate on how to best execute a vision. Working with the right people who have a similar appreciation, and who place the quality of their work in as high regard as you do yours is essential to making everything come together for the client. When we find creative ways to blend the old with the new, we remain inspired by our past while propelling it into the future where it can continue to be cherished.
